MCCAIN VS. OBAMA
DEBATE II OVERVIEW:
QUESTION 1: "The world has changed a great deal and not for the better." --Brokaw
Alan Schaffer: What's the fastest most positive solution to bail these people out?"
MCCAIN : You go to the heart of Anmerica's worries tonight. McCain says the public is angry and fearful. I have a plan to fix this problem. Energy independence (this is key). We have to keep all taxes low, says he doesn't want to raise taxes on anybody. Freeze non-essential spending. We've got to have a package of reforms. We are going to have to do something about home values. I will the Secretary of the Treasury to buy up the bad mortgages. We must stabilize home values. I think most of us were assuming this would be about 300 billion in new spending, but McCain clarified that it would come out of the 700 billion that Congress has already approved. Obama would later say that this was his idea first but now says it's a bad idea. Who's eradic now?
Good exchange for McCain but I think many were expecting there to be fireworks from the onset.
OBAMA : Restates the obvious --worry-- talking point about "final verdict" We have to take decisive action. Step one make sure rescue package works. Cracking down on CEOs (people love this stuff). Middle class need a tax cut, help for homeowners, help state and local govts set up road and bridge projects. What? Obama's answer demonstrates his disconnect from the real problems.
SLIGHT EDGE TO MCCAIN.
QUESTION 2: "Secretary of Treasury?"
MCCAIN : Not you, Tom. Tough question. There are a lot of qualified Americans. We need someone that Americans immediately idenitfy with, that they trust. Mentions Buffett (awful pick). Mentions Meg Whitman (Eghh). She knows how to create jobs (true). It is going to have be somebody that inspires trust and confidence. Corruption and greed have eroded trust.
MEDIOCRE ANSWER.
OBAMA : Warren would be a pretty good choice (again, an awful pick - copycat). Key is making sure that the next Secretary of Treasury understands that it isn't enough to help just those at the top. He might as well have said, who needs a job. We will have a Treasury that devistates the market and eliminates jobs.
WORST ANSWER OBAMA HAS GIVEN.
EDGE TO MCCAIN BUT ONLY BY DEFAULT.

QUESTION 3: "Oliver Clark: Economic crisis: Bailout practice. How will it help those people out."
MCCAIN : Refers to it as a rescue, not a bailout. Mainstreet has paid a price. I left my campaign, suspended it. I went to make sure the tax payers were protected. (This is true). "It will recover". The match that lit this fire was Fannie and Freddie. They were encouraged by Obama and hsi cronies and friends. They gave risky loans...some of us stood up...meanwhile Dems in senate and some Congressmen defended Fannie and Freddie. Sen Obama was second highest recipient of Freddie and Fannie money in history. McCain says the rescue package not enough. He then hits on his housing point again. The only problem here is that I think McCain ignored the question.
STRONG MCCAIN WIN!
OBAMA : What's in the rescue package for you? Credit markets are frozen. I have to correct Sen McCain's history. Let's first of all understand that deregulation was biggest problem. Blasts Mccain as a deregulator (for the record let me say that regulation at least in the case of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae was the problem. Banks were forced to give loans to the poor that they could not pay). "I wrote to Secretary Paulson." Senator McCain didn't mention that the bill he talked about wasn't his bill. Obama is right on this. McCain did jump on board with a call for watching Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac to be looked at. Having said that Obama was no where to be found early on. He also states that he never promoted Fannie Mae? Even in the debate format this was a notable LIE.
OBAMA SCAMBLING TO RECOVER.
STRONG MCCAIN WIN.

QUESTION 4: "Brokaw: Will get much worse before it gets better?
MCCAIN : I think it depends on what we do. We need to stabilize the housing market. This is the third time McCain has brought this up. I am hoping it resonates as a good idea, he also needs to clariy where the money is coming from. Senators and I wrote letter warning about this (Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae) and Obama's name was not on it.
STRONG MCCAIN WIN!
OBAMA : Obama really didn't get a chance to response.
NO VERDICT TO RENDER.

QUESTION 5: "Theresa Finch: How can we trust either of you with our money when both parties got us into this global economic crisis"
MCCAIN : Theresa, I can see why you feel that cynicism and mistrust. I have been a consistent reformer (I like the word "reformer" better than "maverick". I have taken on the big interests. I have a clear record of bipartisan (no one cares McCain). He has never taken on the leaders of his party. Lets look at our records and not our rhetoric, points out some websites you can go to. Obama's is the most liberal big spending record in the Senate. Senate Obama is proposing 860 billion in new spending....
WE HAVE HEARD THIS BEFORE!
OBAMA SCAMBLING TO RECOVER.
STRONG MCCAIN WIN.
